It was erected over twelve hun-dred years ago during the reign of the Caliph Abd el-Melek. It is over 500 feet in circumference and the interior is adorned with exquisite taste and lavish munificence. There are two circles of piers and columns, the walls and dome glitter with the richest colors, while the mosaics and the stained glass are the finest in the world. / The sacred associations of the place, the marvelously beautiful dome, the exquisite taste manifested everywhere, make a profound impression on all who visit the Mosque. Those who have seen the Mosque of Omar have seen the finest and most magnificent structure in the Mohammedan world. / The door seen at the right in the picture leads down a flight of steps to an irregularly shaped cave about 7 feet in height. The Moslems claim this to have been the praying place of Abraham, David, Solomon and Jesus.Classification
